Caving (Speleology)

Caves in Sri Lanka have been used by the Buddhist monks as shelter monasteries since 232 BC. These caves have drip ledged to prevent the flowing of rainwater into the inhibited area in the cave.

In the prehistoric era caves at Ratnapura, Kegalle, and Kalutara districts were utilized for prehistoric settlements. Pahiyangala cave near Bulatsinhala has yielded evidence of anatomically modern man in Sri Lanka more than 37,000 old. Several other human remains have been found in Batadomba-Lena near Kuruwitha, Beli-Lena at Kitulgala, and Alu-Lena near Kegalle (all these are rock caves).

“Waulpane” limestone cave located near Pallebedda is a home for more than 200,000 bats. It is believed that “Nittevo”, a lost race in Sri Lanka sheltered in the “Mahalenama” cave located in Kumana national park.

While you are in caving excises be careful; there might be a chance to find 37,000 years old stone tools or skeleton of humans or remains of prehistoric paintings or evidence of a lost race in Sri Lanka.
